Tourist & Travel Specialist for Cyprus and Middle
East back on top
Cyprus may be a small country, but it?s a
large island ? the third largest in the Mediterranean. And it?s an island with
big hearth ? an island that gives its visitors a genuine welcome and treats
them as friends.
With its spectacular scenery and enviable
climate, it?s no wonder that Aphrodite chose the island as her playground, and
since then, mere mortals have been discovering this "land fit for
Goods" for themselves.
Cyprus is an island of beauty and a country
of contrasts. Cool, pine-clad mountains are a complete scene-change after
golden sunny beaches; tranquil, timeless villages are in striking contrast to
modern cosmopolitan towns; exclusive luxurious beach side hotels can be
exchanged for large areas of unspoiled countryside. Yet in Cyprus all distances
are easily manageable, mostly on modern roads and highways ? with a secondary
route for those more adventurous.
Most important of all, the island offers
peace of mind. When on holiday here, filling of security prevails everywhere
since the crime level is so low, as to be practically non-existent.
There are many fine hotels from large and
luxurious to small and simple ? from the grandeur of the prestigious international
chains to the convenience of hotel apartments with self-catering facilities.
Should you decide to visit Holly Land,
Jordan or to meet mysteries of accent Egypt our own representatives will be
waiting for you.
So pay us a visit or give us a call. We can make for you a holiday to remember!

GEOGRAPHY
AND CLIMATE
Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean, lying at
the hub of three continents (Europe, Asia and Africa), and close to the busy
trade routes linking Western Europe with the Arab World and the Far East.
Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island, with total area of 3.572 sq.
mile (9.251 sq. km.).
The island enjoys the best type of Mediterranean climate
with about 300 days of sunshine per year. The coldest month is January with
minimum and maximum mean temperatures of 9°C and 18°C, respectively, while in
August, the hottest month, the correspondent temperatures are 21°C and 36°C.
POPULATIONS
AND TOWNS
Cyprus? estimates population is 736.000 of whom 80 percent
belong to the Greek Cypriot community, 18 percent to the Turkish Cypriot
community and 2 percent are Armenians, Maronites, British and other European
expatriates.
Greek and Turkish are official languages of the Republic but
English is widely spoken and understood, and is regularly used in commerce and
government.
Apart from the capital, Nicosia, with estimated population
of 240.000, all major cities are located at the coast. Limassol is the second
largest city (population 190.000) and the island's biggest port. Larnaca and
Paphos are the third and fourth largest towns respectively and also popular
holiday resorts. The later two towns have an International Airport.
GOVERNMENT
AND LEGAL SYSTEM
The Cyprus government is similar to that in western
democracies. Human right, political pluralism and private properties are
safeguarded. The Head of State is the President of the Republic, elected by
universal suffrage for a five-year term. The executive organ of the republic is
the Council of Ministers, appointed by the President. The House of
Representatives, whose members hold office for a period of five years, is the
legislative organ of the Republic. The Republic enjoys full diplomatic
relations with 75 nations and is a member of UN, Council of Europe,
Commonwealth, World Bank, IMF and also has an association agreement with
European Union.
THE
ECONOMY
Cyprus has an open free market economy. The role of
government is limited to regulation and the provision of public utilities. Per
capita GNP is over US$ 13.500, one of the highest in the Mediterranean. Cyprus
is often aptly referred to as a European country in the Middle East. The
Economy is driven by tourist and service sectors and a fast growing export -
orientated industry.
The island's currency is Cyprus Pound, made up of one
hundred cents. Central Bank aims to keep it stable against the ECU (CY£ 1 = ECU
1,7486 +/- 15%). In addition to the Central Bank, the banking system consists
of 8 onshore commercial banks, 28 international business banking units and
numbers of specialized financial organization. Commercial banking arrangements
and practice follow the British model.
The cost of living in Cyprus is substantially lower than in
most countries offering a comparable standard and quality of life (excellent
housing, pollution free environment, low crime rate ...). According to the
latest figures produced by Union Bank of Switzerland, Cyprus is the 11th least
expensive business center in the world, and the 2nd least expensive in the
whole of Western Europe.
TRANSPORT
AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Cyprus has two international airports, at Larnaca and
Paphos. An average of 600 scheduled flights per week link Larnaca with more
than 100 cities in Europe, America, Africa and Asia.
The island's road network is quite advanced. A modern
highway links Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca and is presently being extended to
Paphos. Self-drive cars, taxis and bus services are widely available.
Limassol and Larnaca ports are the island's main sea
gateways with fully renewed multi-purpose port systems. Both ports are being
used as regional warehouse and distribution centers with transit cargo enjoy
special treatment. Bonded warehouses are also available in all towns.
Cyprus has invested heavily in the development of
telecommunication sector. As a result, the island may claim, in this respect,
to be among the most developed countries in the world. Apart from conventional
telecommunications services, the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA)
provides wide range of other services and facilities (GSM, PSDN, ISDN,
videoconferencing, Internet, paging, voicemail...). It employs state-of-the-art
technology for its national and international network, consisting of an
extensive submarine fiber optic cable network and an equally impressive
satellite network.
